The year 2022 is a very special one, as our history began exactly 100 years ago in the heart of the beautiful Alps! Since our founding in 1922, we have remained committed to making nutrition inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. Always with the goal in mind of bringing people together regardless of their nutritional needs.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. During the holidays, there are many great traditions that ensure time with family and friends. In particular, the shared experience of enjoying good food is more in focus than any other time of the year. These shared moments of enjoyment are precious as they connect us. At Dr. Schär, we are convinced that it is only truly Christmas when we are all part of these moments. We want to unite people of diverse dietary needs and tastes at the dinner table. That is why our gluten free brand Schär is calling for a new Christmas tradition: We invite everyone to bake gingerbread cookies with different shapes, ages, genders, styles and sizes in order to celebrate the most inclusive Christmas!

At Dr. Schär, we take our responsibility as a manufacturer of gluten-free products very seriously. After all, a gluten-free diet is not only a question of taste, but also of trust. Our promise to consistently meet the highest standards of quality, safety and sustainability is reflected throughout the entire “filiera” (Italian for “value chain”). We accompany our products throughout their entire life cycle. Thanks to close cooperation with scientists, farmers and millers, we are involved in the filiera from seed research to the supermarket.

We are convinced that Dr. Schär’s success is fundamentally based on the commitment and expertise of our staff. That is why we support our associates in their professional and personal development, for example with our Intercompany Exchange program. True to the motto "When we grow as individuals, we grow as a company," our customized training courses and initiatives foster know-how and competencies while offering employees a wide range of opportunities for personal growth.

In December 2020, Dr. Philipp Schoeller took over the role of CEO at Dr. Schär, succeeding founder Ulrich Ladurner. Philipp Schoeller, who was previously Vice President at the world’s largest chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut, has a clear vision of the company’s future: “Our values are responsibility – progress – proximity. These are the guiding principles of our actions. We therefore aspire to be the market leader with our respective brands. This means strong and fast innovation. We need to identify trends early and implement them faster. In doing so, we will become more international, while at the same time taking local needs into account. This is only possible with a strong local presence and local teams,” says the CEO.

Dr. Schär and Desitin, a fully integrated pharmaceutical company focused on CNS (Central Nercvous System) disease and rare diseases, announced today that they have joined forces to promote the Kanso product portfolio. With this agreement, both companies aim to advance the dietary treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy or other conditions for which the ketogenic diet is recommended.

As of July 1, 2021, Dr. Schär will divest its Metabolic Nutrition unit in order to further concentrate on customer segments with special nutritional needs as well as gluten free nutrition. The company is thus parting with the brands Mevalia and Comidamed and its products for the treatment of inborn errors of metabolism. Both brands, as well as the manufacturing facility in Rosbach, Germany, will be acquired by Vitaflo Limited, a business unit of Nestlé Health Science.

On the occasion of this year's World Coeliac Disease Day on 16 May 2021, we at Dr. Schär take it especially to heart to educate people about special dietary needs and gluten intolerance. But one day is not enough for us. We take a whole month to do this: May is coeliac awareness month for our Schär brand across all countries. We talk about the autoimmune disease and raise awareness of what coeliac disease means and how it can be treated.
